Discussion for Reading Week #1

Most weeks you are reading not only a selection from the book itself, but also a short overview by the editor of the book.  This is to help give you some context for understanding and processing what you are reading.  Keep in mind that when you see terms like "Libertarian" or "Liberal" that those words have a different connotation in the world of philosophy than in politics.

For Thursday's group you need to find the one paragraph or selection from Hospers that you think is most significant.  You will read that section out loud to the group and then you'll have to explain why you chose that selection.  When choosing the section, you are looking for more than just a couple conclusionary sentences, you are also looking for warrants that support that conclusion.  Everybody in the group will have an opportunity to share their point.

Peter will be at the group this week to prod you along and help keep things moving.

If you are looking for just a little more explanation of Libertarian thought, Wikipedia does a pretty good job -- even just reading the first paragraph helps. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Libertarianism

Have a good week.

Andy.

Google Notebook

Another amazing invention, Google Notebook.

This is the dream program for debate. It will allow you to organize your all of your debate materials, but especially all of your research. The Google Blog notes, "That's why we built Google Notebook--to give you an online "notebook" where you can organize all your research, add personal notes to it, and share it with others. Google Notebook surfs along quietly with you as you browse, letting you clip and annotate whatever text, images, and links that help answer your question, all without ever leaving the webpage you're on."

The Google Notebook Overview gives you a good idea of how this all works.

The book we are reading is:
Justice: Alternative Political Perspectives by James Sterba.
Andy has all the details on the website of that.

The first two are actually going to be from 630-730 because
of after school activities, etc., its just easier, sorry if it doesn't
work for you but debate should come first anyways.

If anyone wants to host at one of the three open dates just email me
at this address: courtney.a.erickson@gmail.com. I know that those
three dates are the days that nsd is running and parts of vbi I
believe as well, so I don't know how much of the reading group that
takes out. If everyone who is going to go to camp or is going to be
out of town for one of the meetings could please email me with those
dates, that would be helpful just so people can have a vague idea of
how many people are going to be at their house. All this is also going
to be posted on our google calendar. And if you didn't get to sign up
for the group at the meeting because you were gone or whatever, just
email me signing up. Ok that's all the details for now, have fun.

Access to JSTOR

JSTOR is a powerful information service that should be re-titled, "Get Your Debate Evidence Here!" Check out this list of publications. It's amazing! So, how to get access for next year? Here are the steps:
  1. Get a Dakota County library card.
  2. Once you have a Dakota County card, you will need register your card with the Minneapolis Public Library. In 7-10 days, your card will be given remote access to electronic journals and databases available at the Minneapolis Public Library.
  3. Now you can use JSTOR from anywhere you can get online. Use this link for remote JSTOR access. (It's also permanently linked on our list of research tools as well.)
JSTOR files are delivered as PDF files, so you'll need to have Acrobat Reader installed on your computer. If you are using the Apple OS X computers, open the files with Acrobat Reader rather than Preview, which is generally horrible with PDFs.

Order Your Summer Reading Book

At our meeting on the 17th, Abbie and Courtney will explain more details of how our summer reading program will work, but the book we've chosen is Justice: Alternative Political Perspectives by James Sterba.

Now, you do not need to spend very much money to get this book. We are going to use the 3rd edition which I've been able to find for anywhere from 25 cents to 10 dollars. My copy was a whopping 50 cents -- shipping was more than the book itself.

How to order? The ISBN number of the book is 0534527493. There are a bunch of online used book retailers who carry the book. I was able to find it on Half.com, Amazon.com, Biblio.com and Alibris.

Don't worry about buying a new copy or getting one that is underlined, creased, etc. As long as you can read it, it will work fine. You will probably write in your own copy anyhow.

You should place your order soon so that you get a copy in time for the start of the program.
