28th Avenue LRT Station

For those of you going on the Captain's outing to the Twins game on Wednesday night, you are getting on the LRT at the 28th Avenue station. Bailee and Hannah will not leave the station until everybody is there, but be on time because it takes a while to get to the game.

Here is a map to the 28th Avenue LRT station:

Ready for more practice rounds? Heck yes!

You all need to be 100% ready to go. I want the 1AC's to be read starting at 5:30 -- not people first dragging into practice at 5:30. You must be pre-flowed. I know I've mentioned this before, but in case anyone's interested, here's a link to the debate briefs business that I run.

It's called Trinity Briefs:

And there's also a weblog where I plan on offering informative posts about the new topic (and all upcoming LD topics) on a regular basis:

Twins Game for Team Bonding

The experienced members of the debate team would like to invite everybody, but especially our novice debaters, to gather together for a trip to the Twins game on Wednesday, August 30th.

Bailee Rasmussen is one of the organizers and here is her note to the team:

As a fun way to get to know everyone on the team, the experienced members have planned a bonding event at the Twins Game! We will be going to the game on Wednesday, August 30th versus the Royals at 7:10. The game tickets are only $6. During Thursday's practice we will have sign-ups and you need to turn your money in then as well. (Checks payable to Bailee Rasmussen)

We will meet at Lakeville North High School's upper parking lot at 5:30 pm and we will carpool to the light rail. (This way we will not have everyone driving in the cities.) Everyone needs to bring three $1 bills for the light rail, and any additional money for food.

ALSO, since we are going on Wednesday night, practice will be changed.

*All experienced members need to attend practice on Tuesday, August 30th at 5:30 (email Andy if you cannot attend). If possible, you should also attend the work session on Friday.

*All novices will only have practice on Monday, August 28th and Thursday, August 31st that week.

Rebuttal Evaluation Form

Practice debates on Monday mean that we'll be re-doing rebuttals on Wednesday and Thursday. We want you to be thinking strategically about your rebuttals. To help you think through your rebuttal, I've created this:

Rebuttal Reflection and Evaluation Form

You must download, complete, and print this form prior to practice on Wednesday so that when you meet with a coach to re-do your rebuttal, we can help you make it better. Your rebuttal re-dos are not a repeat of your rebuttal, they are a much better version of your rebuttal. This form ought to help you improve.

Tips for Using JSTOR

Congrats to the many of you who followed these directions to gain access to JSTOR . I've been watching you work with JSTOR and have a few suggestions that will help you find more information and better use what you find.
  1. You can download your JSTOR article and then view it in Acrobat Reader. Click the "Download" link at the top and bottom of any page.
  2. I've found that researching reference links in an article can produce great results. There are a bunch of ways to view references in an article. Ever see those red arrows in JSTOR? These are links:

  3. You can browse the contents of journals -- which is really where you can hit the debate research jackpot. JSTOR is organized so that you can browse the contents of a journal. Click "Previous Item in Journal" or "Next Item in Journal" links. You can also scroll to the top or bottom of the web page and click "Table of Contents" and that will show you the contents of that issue. Yeah, that's cool!
  4. Searching. JSTOR does so much more than keyword searching.
  5. You don't have to re-type anything from JSTOR. You can open the document up in Acrobat Reader and then copy and paste chunks of it as an Image. You'll have to use Acrobat's image tool. And then paste it into a Word document. You can just paste into your cases or briefs without any need to re-type (yuk!). Here is what the image selection button looks like:

UPDATED: Novice Reading for Thursday

We want to get you started thinking about the resolution you'll be debating in September and October. (Thanks to ace web-user Sara, the first link we posted did not work, this one is along the same lines.) We found an article titled Laying the Groundwork for Universal Health Care Coverage that you should read.

You will need to read this article prior to practice on Thursday.

Joining The Debate Team

Our first practice is Monday, August 14th at 5:30PM in the IMC of Lakeville North. You will find a full set of calendars on the website.

Students from both North and South attend all practices.

Prior to our first practice, you will need to complete some eligibility and activities registration forms. The activities registration forms for 2006-07 are available for download. Complete the forms and return them along with the $90 activity fee to your respective high school Activities Office. You can also pay the fee online, but will still need to turn the paperwork in to the office.

Be sure to get a receipt so that we know you are eligible to practice.

If you have questions about this process, contact coach Andy Charrier at 651.387.8305 or send email to charrier@debate194.net

Kickoff Dinner Details

Please read this note carefully. You are asked to respond at the bottom.

As our team has grown in size, we need to make the 4th Annual Kickoff Dinner (5PM on Saturday, August 12th) happen in a different way -- it's just too much food for us to cook and still enjoy the day. Thus, we are going to organize the dinner in a potluck fashion. Everybody will be asked to bring a family-sized portion of some item. If everybody does their job, we'll have plenty of food. We will provide drinks, silverware, plates, napkins, etc.

Here is the breakdown of what to bring:

Seniors = Desserts!

Juniors = Main dish items.

10th graders from South = Side dishes like fruit, veggies, cold salads,

9th and 10th graders from North = Warm side dishes such as macaroni and cheese, baked beans, buffalo wings, etc.

You need to RSVP to me at charrier@debate194.net so we know if you are coming and that you've seen this message.

Andy.

Campers: A call for lecture notes

VBI, NSD, and NDF campers...here is a call for copies of your lecture
notes from camp. I know that some of you took notes on your computer
and I would love to have a copy of your notes.

Here are the topics I am interested in reading about right now -- Tom,
don't sent me the Lacan notes right now :)

* Rebuttals, weighing arguments, resolving clash, etc.
* Case-writing (not about any topic, but about writing cases in general).
* Effective use of cross-x.
* Judge adaptation.

Please send them to me in Word or OneNote or whatever electronic
format you have them in and I will put them to good use.
