3rd Topic Practice Times

A summary of practice for the next couple weeks:

Dec 27, 28, and 29
9AM in the IMC of North
I don't have an "ending" time for these days -- we'll work until we
think we've done enough for one day.

Jan 3
5PM in Computer lab near IMC of South (there is a class in the IMC on
Wednesday's, so we'll use the lab across the hallway since it's just
our small group).

Jan 4 and 5
5PM in IMC of South

If we need more practice we can add some time on Saturday, Jan 6.

Watch Michael Sandel

This is very cool. Ever read evidence from Sandel? Wonder what it's like to hear him lecture? Well, Harvard makes that possible. Try this link which takes you to a video preview of his course. The topics in this video covers a whole bunch of common debate arguments. If you like LD, you'll love this video.

Wait until you get to Sandel's observation, "Mike, I noticed you raised your hand."

Here is a description:

Hundreds of students pack Harvard's Sanders Theater for Michael Sandel's "Justice" course—an introduction to moral and political philosophy. They come to hear Sandel lecture about great philosophers of the past—from Aristotle to John Stuart Mill—but also to debate contemporary issues that raise philosophical questions—about individual rights and the claims of community, equality and inequality, morality and law.

Despite the size of the course, Sandel engages students in lively discussion on topics including affirmative action, income distribution, and same-sex marriage, showing that even the most hotly contested issues of the day can be the subject of reasoned moral argument. This film, which contains excerpts of several classes, is part of a project to make this legendary course an educational resource that reaches beyond the Harvard classroom.

Saturday is Challenge pairing in Varsity. Everybody does this differently, here is how we are doing it for Varsity LD:
  • We will list all varsity teams in order. In R4 and R6 the highest seed will challenge from top-down; in R5 and R7 we will challenge up the bracket from the bottom. Challenger can pick anybody in the pool to debate.
  • Chosen team cannot decline.
  • You can re-challenge a debaters you've already met.
  • Sides will be chosen based on draw of cards after the pairing is made. There are no side-constraints.
  • Judges will be chosen by random draw.
  • If a debater is not present at the time of his/her challenge, the tab room will pick somebody for you to debate. You cannot have a teammate represent you at the challenge. Only the debater or her/his coach can do the challenge.
  • We reserve the right to clarify any of these rules as needed to make things run smoothly. :)
