Joining Lakeville Debate

Here is a quick summary of what steps were needed to join the debate team.

The one significant thing you should know is that new debaters only compete against other new debaters -- so it's not like you join the team and then suddenly have to debate people who are in their 4th year of debate. We have excellent coaches to help you be totally prepared for debate.

  1. Have your paperwork completed and turned in to the Activities Office of your respective high school by Friday, August 10th. You cannot practice until your paperwork is completed. Bring your receipt to practice so we know you have completed registration.
You can find all of the forms on the Activities Registration page -- for North or South. If you are in 8th grade, you would register with the high school you would attend.
  2. First day of practice will be Monday, August 13th at 5:30PM in the IMC of Lakeville North.
  3. Novice debaters will practice on Monday at North, Wednesday at North, and Thursday at South. Practice times are 5:30 to 6:30PM. We make adjustment to allow you to fulfill civic or religious obligations that might conflict with debate practice. We practice as one team, so you'd attend 3 practices per week.
  4. Everything you need to know will be on the team website at http://debate194.net You will need to check that daily once the season begins and once a week prior to the start of the season.
  5. Parent meeting on Tuesday, August 22nd at 5:30PM. Room 248 of North.
  6. Prior to practice starting, debaters will need a Gmail account, a Dakota County library card, and an expanding file folder such as those made by Pendaflex or Esselte with at least 20 pockets. Remember to get a folder that will stand upright on your desk.
  7. You are expected to be available to debate at tournaments. See the calendar which is listed under "Links" on our team website.
  8. Our own tournament is Saturday, October 13th. We will need many parent volunteers and student workers to make this event happen.
  9. My phone is 651.387.8305 and email is charrier@debate194.net

This email alert has been automatically generated by www.nflonline.org.

Dear NFL Coach,

We thought you may be checking emails this summer and may be able to contact some of your students via email to let them know about this wonderful contest available to them.

Please forward this to your students and ask them to visit www.WordsThatShookTheWorld.com.  This exciting new contest series offers thousands of dollars in scholarships and interesting prizes.

The particular contest is a chance for a student (and chaperone) to win a trip to NY ,  tickets to the sold out "Police" concert at Giant Stadium on Sunday, August 5 AND a visit backstage to meet Sting and The Police.

Wait!!!!  There is more...the contest provides special incentives for NFL members and coaches.

Here's the offer . . .

TEACHERS: The NFL teacher who gets the largest number of students to upload a speech on this week's topic, "My Message For America - The Global Water Crisis",  as long as it is at least 10 kids,   will receive an all expense paid trip to NY, tickets to see "The Police" in concert on August 5th, and a backstage pass to meet Sting and the Police.  Alternatively,  the teacher will receive a cash reward  of $500 ,  if they can't or don't want to go to NY for the concert and backstage experience.

STUDENTS:   If 100 NFL students enter the competition, the NFL student who submits the best speech on "The Global Water Crisis", even if he or she does not win the overall competition for that speech .

Go to www.WordsThatShookTheWorld.com for more information concerning the contest.  Act quickly as the contest has already begun.

Grapevine Tournament Information

Here is who we'd like to bring to Grapevine to open the season.

We'll fly out on Friday morning of the tournament -- the good news is that airfare to Dallas is cheap and there are many non-stops, meaning we don't even have to get up early to fly out.  Debate on Friday and Saturday then fly home Sunday morning.  I'm not too worried about the timing of this yet because we have a smaller group and there are so many available flights.

Again, if you can't go and are on the list, now is the time to let me know.

NDF Camp Resolutions

Taken from the NDF website:

NDF will use the following resolutions this summer.

FIRST TOPIC (VARSITY AND REPEATERS ONLY):

Resolved: In the United States, plea bargaining in exchange for testimony is unjust.

SECOND TOPIC (ALL STUDENTS):

Resolved: Limiting economic inequality ought to be a more important social goal than maximizing economic freedom.

JV and Novice students will compete on the SECOND topic throughout the institute.

Varsity students and Repeaters are expected to come to institute prepared to debate the FIRST topic.
