Tournament: Mid-America Classic
Location: West Des Valley (Freshman Campus)
Date: Sept 28 to Oct 1
Coach: Andy Charrier

Times:  Meet in the parking lot of the bus garage by the District Office in downtown Lakeville.  We are using the school van and will leave at 3PM. We'll stop and get dinner on the way down. Return time is based on our performance.  If we are eliminated on Sunday after doubles, we'll head right home.  Otherwise we'll stay on Monday and debate. :)

Questions: If you or your parents have a question, contact Andy Charrier at 651.387.8305 or email to charrier@gmail.com

Hotel: STAYBRIDGE SUITES - WEST DES MOINES, 6905 LAKE DR. WEST DES MOINES, IOWA 50266.  Hotel has internet and a very nice breakfast buffet.  We stayed here last year and it was nice -- room have a small kitchen, etc.  I will figure out expense and send you an email for hotel charges.

Debating:
Tom Caruso -- North
Courtney Erickson -- North
Tyler Traub -- North
Christian Keil -- South

Judging:
Andy Charrier -- South

Forest Lake TNT - Sept 25

Tournament: Tuesday Night Tournament @ Forest Lake
Location: Forest Lake High School
Date: Tuesday, September 25
Coach in Charge: Paul L. Starita

Bus Times: We will run the bus in a big loop to pick up kids at the various schools:
1:45 at McGuire by main doors -- out of class at 1:30
1:55 at South by athletic entrance -- out of class at 1:40
2:05 at North by lower doors on student parking side -- out of class at 1:50
2:15 at Kenwood by main doors -- out of class at 2:00

It takes about 1 hour to get up to Forest Lake. The team should be ready to return home between 6 and 6:30PM -- meaning the bus should be back to Lakeville about 7:30 or so. Pickup location is the upper doors of Lakeville North for the entire team -- so no matter what school you attend, your rides should meet you at the upper doors of Lakeville North.

What to Wear: You can wear regular clothes to school and then you can change into your debate competition clothing at school -- we release you from class 15 minutes early so that you can change and get ready. Places to store clothing:
McGuire -- see Ms. Kraus who works in the main office
Kenwood -- see Ms. Clark who teaches 8th grade math for Comets
South -- bring to Activities Office
North -- bring to Teacher Center across from room 126

Make sure you have everything you need -- socks, shoes, tie, belt, etc.

What to Eat: For sure bring something to eat (a) as a snack on the way up and (b) as something to have as dinner. The bus doesn't stop on the way home and the TNT tournaments do NOT have a concesssion stand.

Questions: If you or your parents have a question, contact Andy Charrier at 651.387.8305 or email to charrier@gmail.com

Saturday Novice Practice Tournament

This Saturday is our practice tournament for novices. I can't believe
that this date has arrived so quickly. Coaches Abbie, Paul, and Steve
are all impressed with the amount of effort you've put into preparing.

Here are the details to know:

1. We will run this like a regular tournament so that you know exactly
how everything works. You should think of this day as a dress
rehearsal. You will learn where to stand, how to setup in your room,
how to read a schedule, how timing works, etc.

2. Arrive at South and be in the Commons dressed for competition at
8:30 -- no need to be any earlier.

3. You will debate 3 rounds and then we'll have a practice awards
ceremony and your parents can plan to pick you up at Noon.

4. Experienced debaters -- you will serve as judges and mentors for
the tournament. You will fill out ballots with plenty of details and
help walk our novices through the mechanics of debate. We will talk
more about this at practice on Thursday. Bring your timers.

Wednesday Practice -- Andy and Liz's group

Here is the deal:

It is simply too overwhelming for Liz to be helping a giant bunch of
people at Wednesday nights. I am going to change around a few
practice times. The plan isn't perfect yet, but it starts tomorrow
like this:

On 9/19 only these people in our group need to come to practice --
Tyler, Tom, Christian, and Courtney.

Now...if you are in our group and want to come to library to WORK on
debate, you are welcome to come, but otherwise you should consider
Wednesday (tomorrow) night to be an optional night. The library will
need to remain a quiet, work-intensive environment.

Andy.

PS. Novice and 2nd year practice is as normal.

Wake Forest Results

Recap:

Bryant, Kelsey, and Catherine make JV octos. Bryant meets Catherine and it's a coach-over for Catherine. Catherine drops in Quarters.

Tom, Tyler, Pat, and Steven are in Varsity doubles. Steve drops in doubles. Pat meets Tyler and it's a coach-over for Pat who drops in Octos.

Mike is in Impromptu finals, getting 4th place. He was in semis of extemp speaking as well.

Nice job to the whole team!

Grapevine Recap

The first tournament of the 2007-08 season is now history. We have 3 people who clear to doubles -- Tyler, Courtney, and Steven. Steven does a nice job, but loses to a Hockaday debater in doubles. Tyler and Courtney have the bad luck of hitting each other in doubles. Courtney advanced as the higher seed, where she lost to Crowley GC in Octos.

Tim, Tom, and Julie all finish with enough wins but not enough speaker points to clear. Sarah made the big jump from novice to TOC-level varsity and lived to tell the world about the experience. Actually, Sarah was undefeated on the 2nd day of the tournament which was great.

In Extemp Speaking, Mike Berger places 2nd!

Everything Wake Forest

You can bookmark this page for all Wake Forest National Earlybird tournament information.

You need to get yourself to the airport by 4:30PM on Thursday. We will gather on the LOWER level (really below ground) near the NWA group check-in desk. Best thing is to come in door #4 and go down the escalator -- we'll be near the landing. 4:30 gives us plenty of time to get everybody checked in and through security.

I have added more information:
  1. The balance of the shuttle, van, and hotel translates into an expense of $212.50 per debater. Please make checks payable to Andy Charrier and have them to me at practice on Monday, September 10th.
  2. Bring clothing for 3 days of debating. Also bring a comfy pair of shoes for walking as we have about a 1 mile walk from our hotel over to the high school where you will debate on Friday and Saturday. You will also want to check the forecast -- if it looks rainy, you will want to bring an umbrella.
  3. The PTA at North Forsyth puts out a lot of food for you to buy at the tournament and we are pretty close to a couple other places. For sure bring some snacks along on the trip. Also, our flight gets in at 10PM on Thursday and it's about a 2 hour ride so you will for sure want to eat before flying out on Thursday.
  4. There is a book store on the Wake Forest campus and you might want to bring along some cash to buy shirts or other prizes on Sunday.
  5. Diane Schmidt (Julie's mom) is coming along just to help watch over our team.
  6. Right now there are 59 people in JV and 145 in Varsity. And 55 are entered in Extemp Speaking.
  7. Bring along homework because you will likely have chunks of time on Sunday to study.
  8. You will need to bring a photo ID for airport security. And make sure that you follow TSA's rules for what you can and can't carry on the airplane.
  9. Finally, remember that when we travel, we are quiet, responsible, and professional. We are the face of Lakeville that others see and we want to make a good impression.
  10. My cell is 651.387.8305 if anybody needs to reach me.
We will be staying at the Baymont Inn & Suites - Winston-Salem/ Univ. Pkwy 200 Mercantile Drive Winston-Salem, NC 27105. The last time we were at this tournament we used this hotel, although it was a Super 8 at that time.

Tournament is at North Forsyth High School on Friday and Saturday and break rounds and awards are on Sunday on the Wake Forest campus.

We are still flying in waves, but details have changed. We are all on the same flight going out, some people come back Sunday night, others on Monday morning. All flights are non-stop.

Debate Outfit For Sale

Skirt is size 4, jacket is size 6. Plus good quality size 6 white shirt. The outfit was $400 at Nordstrom's and has been worn for 1 season only. We are asking $30 for the whole package. If you want to try it on, drop me an email at charrier@debate194.net and I will bring it to practice.

Final Grapevine Details

Here are final details you need to know:

1. We will meet at the airport at 6AM. (You will have to car pool or arrange rides -- I can take 3 people with me.) Gathering place is the LOWER level ticketing area for NWA -- come in door #4 and go down the escalator. It has some places to sit and we can check bags, etc.

2. Coaches and judges -- we each need to take an extemp tub with us, so just bring one bag to check. Your other bag will be an extemp tub.

3. I will do online check-in for everybody on Thursday night and will give you your boarding pass on Friday morning.

4. We don't have to be to Grapevine HS until later in the day, so we'll have the shuttle take us and our luggage to the hotel. Then, once we are there, we can either camp out in the commons of the hotel and/or their are places to eat nearby. As soon as they have rooms ready, we can change, nap, etc.

5. There are 3 rounds of debate on Friday. Round 1 at 4PM. Mike and I have no idea how the extemp schedule will work. :)
If your parents are looking for info on flights, hotel, etc. I've posted all of that at this link.

And here is the schedule:
