Jan-Feb Topic is NUKES

The National Forensic League has announced that the Lincoln-Douglas
debate resolution for for the January/February time period is:

"Resolved: It is just for the United States to use military force to
prevent the acquisition of nuclear weapons by nations that pose a
military threat."

The above resolution will also be used for the Tournament of Champions.

Awards Night and Awards

The 2007 Debate Awards Night is Tuesday, December 18th at 6PM -- event will be at Lakeville North.  Plan to bring your parents and family.  This is not a formal event and is not a banquet-type event.  We DO want debaters to wear clothing that would look good in photos -- you don't need to wear your debate outfits, but we don't want any ripped jeans and t-shirts either.

There are a couple things you need to do:

1. Complete the form for lettering. Download the 2007 lettering worksheet.
This form is due to Andy Charrier no later than December 3rd.

2. Varsity debaters will want to apply for Lake Conference awards.   Links to the various forms are available here.

Joining The Speech Team

From: Liz Vieira
Date: Nov 21, 2007 10:15 PM

The general information about speech is relevant to both North and South teams, information at the bottom is about trying out for the team at your high school.

Some debaters find that participating in speech gives them similar intellectual stimulation once the debate season has ended.  While there is a bit of overlap for some Varsity debaters in January, the seasons tend to compliment rather than compete with one another.

Most debaters compete in extemporaneous speaking which involves having 30 minutes to prepare a 7 minute speech in response to a question about current events.  While your debate skills aid you in the limited preparation time, the speaking skills can also help you stay in shape for next year's debate season.

Speech is also a good way to build up your NFL points; the reason people like Courtney and Mike have so many is because they compete in both speech and debate.

I coach extemp speaking at North and Andy coaches at South.  If you have specific questions about what it's like you can talk to Abbie, Mike, Christian, Tyler, Tom, Steven, Karen, Courtney or Elisabeth.  Bryant and Julie also compete in other categories on the speech team.

To try out for North:
Auditions for the North Speech Team will be next week; there is an informational meeting on Monday after school, and auditions begin Wednesday.  Tuesday is an auditions workshop, after which there will be another info meeting (same as Monday, for people who couldn't be there).  You will then sign up for an audition slot Wednesday, Thursday or Friday after school.  If you are going to UT and you plan on auditioning, please contact me ASAP so I can ensure that you can schedule an audition time that doesn't conflict with the travel plans.

The time commitment will vary based on the event you compete in, but extemp speaking will practice 3 days a week after school and you are expected to be there for around 2 hours all of the days, although arrangements can be made for exceptional circumstances.

To try out for South:
Auditions for the speech team will be held on Tuesday, November 27th and Thursday, November 29th. Please sign up for an audition time outside A109. See Mrs. Heinis with any questions.

Apple Valley Results

Nice job to everybody who debated this weekend.  You all worked very hard to prepare and your effort showed in your performance.

Novice -- results packet and speaker awards
JV -- results packet and speaker awards
Varsity -- results packet -- Christian was 18th speaker and Tom was 16th speaker

Other highlights:

When we left, it looked like Lakeville South might win the school sweepstakes championship -- more on that tomorrow.

Thanks to Tyler and Tim for helping prep novice debaters.

Dylan was a semifinalist in Novice and Preeya was for sure the only 8th grader to clear. Also congrats to Joe and Jayant for clearing in novice too.

Joe, Catherine, and Jess all cleared in JV.  Catherine was TOP speaker in JV!

Finally....Christian earned his 2nd bid to the Tournament of Champions and will compete against an elite field at the University of Kentucky this May.  He is the first Lakeville debater to fully qualify for the TOC ever.
