State Debate Tournament Information

MSHSL State Debate Tournament
Jan 18-19, 2008
Rosemount High School

Here is the plan: I will excuse you for the whole day. We will meet at my house at 8AM for fruit and Belgian waffles, plus review plan for the tournament.

You will debate 4 rounds on Friday and 2 on Saturday. I have posted a full copy of the schedule here. Round 1 starts at 3PM.

Same rules of evidence apply as Sections -- meaning full cites need to be read.

Here is how the rounds are paired:
Rounds 1 and 2 - Entries will be randomly placed in a schedule for rounds 1 and 2 based on the following criteria: entries shall uphold each side of the resolution; entries shall debate two different sections than their own; entries shall debate either a first and a fourth place finisher from section competition or a second and a third place finisher.

Rounds 3 and 5 - Rounds 3 and 5 will be paired high/low within win-loss records, beginning with the undefeated group, and progressing by number of losses. If a group has an uneven number of entries, the middle ranked entry from the next group shall be drawn up and ranked according to speaker points. If there is not a clear middle team, randomly draw from the middle-most teams. A team shall not be drawn up in both Rounds 3 and 5. Sides for these debates will alternate by the high teams in the pairings; beginning with the high team in the first pairing being placed by draw as affirmative or negative; the high team in the next pairing will then be placed on the opposite side; the high team in each successive pairing will alternate sides following this pattern throughout the win-loss bracket.

Rounds 4 and 6 - Entries will be separated into two groups: those due to uphold the affirmative and those due to uphold the negative. Within each group, entries shall be ranked first by win-loss record, then by speaker points, then by draw. The highest ranked entry scheduled to uphold the affirmative should meet the highest ranked entry scheduled to uphold the negative; the second highest entries should meet; and so on.

Courtney placed first, Tyler second, Christian third and Tim fourth. Between the four of them, they only dropped one ballot that wasn't in a North/ South round. Congratulations to all and good luck at State!

Section 3 Tournament

Section 3 Debate Tournament
Providence Academy ( click here for directions)
8-9 January 2007

This is the tournament to qualify for State.  The top 4 debaters will debate at state the following weekend.  We are debating again Eagan, Sibley, Rosemount, St. Thomas Academy, plus Lakeville North and Lakeville South.

Lakeville North
Courtney Erickson
Tyler Traub

Lakeville South
Tim Jennings
Christian Keil

Round 1 on both days starts at 3:30PM with student info meeting at 3:15 on the first day.

If everything stays on schedule, we should be done debating about 8PM on the first night, which seems likely since the schedule is preset totally on Tuesday.

I will pick you up in my Jeep.  Can we all meet at the upper doors of North at 1:45 on both days?  I could do a pickup at South if needed too.
