Forms are available on the school website and fees can be paid using a credit card. Please pay the fee to the school you attend (or for 8th graders, the school you plan to attend).

Lakeville North Activities
Lakeville South Activities

NOTE: Debaters do NOT need to complete the physical.

Additionally, there is a mandatory meeting on MONDAY, AUGUST 11 at 6 pm for debaters and their parents. All students must attend because this is a school/ MSHSL requirement, not just debate. The debate team will attend the meeting at North (unless parents need to attend the meeting at South for other sports-- the content of the meeting will be the same but will break off into teams at the end which is why we need most debaters in the same place).

Interested in debate?

All students are welcome to join the debate team.

The attached file contains information about what debate is and what the Lakeville Debate team is all about.

If you would like to join the team, send us your information and plan on coming to practice on August 12 at 5:30 in the North Library.

For further questions, contact coach Liz Vieira.

08debateinfo.pdf

First Practice of 2008

The first practice of the 2008 season will be Tuesday, August 12 at 5:30 in the North Library.

Students interested in joining the team should plan to attend.

Experienced debaters, come ready to shake the dust off and get some important skills work in before the topic comes out August 15.

Lakeville Debate Site Back Up!

After a long hiatus, the website will begin to be updated again.

Please contact head coach Liz Vieira with any questions during the summer.

State Debate Tournament Information

MSHSL State Debate Tournament
Jan 18-19, 2008
Rosemount High School

Here is the plan: I will excuse you for the whole day. We will meet at my house at 8AM for fruit and Belgian waffles, plus review plan for the tournament.

You will debate 4 rounds on Friday and 2 on Saturday. I have posted a full copy of the schedule here. Round 1 starts at 3PM.

Same rules of evidence apply as Sections -- meaning full cites need to be read.

Here is how the rounds are paired:
Rounds 1 and 2 - Entries will be randomly placed in a schedule for rounds 1 and 2 based on the following criteria: entries shall uphold each side of the resolution; entries shall debate two different sections than their own; entries shall debate either a first and a fourth place finisher from section competition or a second and a third place finisher.

Rounds 3 and 5 - Rounds 3 and 5 will be paired high/low within win-loss records, beginning with the undefeated group, and progressing by number of losses. If a group has an uneven number of entries, the middle ranked entry from the next group shall be drawn up and ranked according to speaker points. If there is not a clear middle team, randomly draw from the middle-most teams. A team shall not be drawn up in both Rounds 3 and 5. Sides for these debates will alternate by the high teams in the pairings; beginning with the high team in the first pairing being placed by draw as affirmative or negative; the high team in the next pairing will then be placed on the opposite side; the high team in each successive pairing will alternate sides following this pattern throughout the win-loss bracket.

Rounds 4 and 6 - Entries will be separated into two groups: those due to uphold the affirmative and those due to uphold the negative. Within each group, entries shall be ranked first by win-loss record, then by speaker points, then by draw. The highest ranked entry scheduled to uphold the affirmative should meet the highest ranked entry scheduled to uphold the negative; the second highest entries should meet; and so on.

2008 Qualifiers:

Section 1:
1st Akshar (Eastview)
2nd Jake (Eastview)
3rd Chris (Apple Valley)
4th Michelle (Apple Valley)

Section 2:
1st place Brian Ashburn, Brainerd
2nd Jenna Riley, Brainerd
3rd Kristen Dorumsgaard, St Francis
4th Tiffany Rootes, St Francis

Section 3
1st Place - Courtney Erickson (Lakeville North)
2nd Place - Tyler Traub (Lakeville North)
3rd Place - Christain Keil (Lakeville South)
4th Place - Tim Jennings (Lakeville South)

Section 4
1st Place - Hannah Johnson (St. Paul Central)
2nd Place - Soren Duggan (Forest Lake)
3rd Place - Kathryn Haglin (Forest Lake)
4th Place - Jonathan Wald (St. Paul Academy)

Section 5
1st Place - Francesca Parente (Wayzata)
2nd Place - John Scoggin (Blake)
3rd Place - Zac Field (Coon Rapids)
4th Place - Dru Svoboda (Wayzata)

Section 6
1st Place - Dan Willey (Cooper)
2nd Place - David McNeil (Edina)
3rd Place - Erik Legried (Cooper)
4th Place - Conor Doherty (Hopkins)

Sections

Courtney placed first, Tyler second, Christian third and Tim fourth.
